The first incarnation of York Stone Restoration Company was founded by Scotsman Andy Steedman at the beginning of the 1970’s in Sheffield, England. York Stone undertook all aspects of the stonemasonry industry including using the pioneering method to restore stone using reconstructed stone. Over the subsequent years projects included restoring grand historical houses, stately homes, churches, cathedrals and even a castle or two around England, Scotland and Wales.
After working part time for York Stone during his school holidays, in 1993 Rob Steedman, Andy’s son decided to embark on a stonemasonry apprenticeship. Rob spent time at both college in York and on site working for York Stone. The college course taught how to shape stone using a mallet, chisels and compressed air tools. The course also gave tuition on building and pointing. He qualified with top marks in 1996 and continued to work for the family business where he had already begun and continued to learn the art of stone restoration using either reconstructed stone or natural stone from Andy.
In 2004/05 Rob made his first visit to Australia as a backpacker and loved it so much that he decided he wanted to return on a permanent basis. He had his working visa granted in 2010 and has lived here since, being in Sydney permanently from 2012, which is when he began trading as Rob Steedman Stonemason.
Over the following seven years Rob worked on many interesting projects around Sydney for homeowners and building companies.
In 2019 Rob decided to carry on the York Stone Restoration legacy and rebrand his business accordingly which continues with excellence in all forms of stonemasonry.

We got Rob's number by referral from our Architect.
We had engaged Rob to restore a sandstone staircase for a 115 year old federation house as well as rebuild a sandstone wall.
Rob was working down the road so we were able to see his work first hand. No job was too hard for Rob, he delivered per our brief and even suggested practical ways to save us money.
We are very happy with the results and would highly recommend Rob
